On the sixth of October at RSUH with the support of the Russian-Austrian Public Forum ‘Sochi Dialogue’ a lecture ‘The Role of Image and Etiquette in International Relations’ was held. The lecturer was Valentina Dmitrievna Khlistun, a specialist in secular business etiquette.
During the lecture, the audience had an opportunity to learn about different aspects of imageology, such as kinesics or body etiquette, speech culture, social and business etiquette, the subtleties of diplomatic protocol and the formation of business dress code.
The lecture began with a discussion of one of the key topics - the importance of personal image and professional etiquette in international relations. The speaker emphasised that image is not just an external appearance, but also an essential tool in establishing trusting and effective relationships. These thoughts became a kind of a starting point for further discussion, and the audience immediately became lively, asking questions and thinking about how to apply the knowledge gained in their future professional activities.
Special attention was paid to the topic of differences between the common and business etiquette. The speaker gave examples of how important it is to be able to distinguish between these categories, as every action in a business environment is free to convey deeper signals.
‘Etiquette goes beyond simple manners; it's about respecting and understanding the cultural framework that regulates any interaction’ -noted the speaker. This idea was echoed by the students, and one of them asked a question about the nuances of intercultural communication in international meetings.
Different approaches to presenting oneself in international practice were also discussed at the meeting. In particular, it was noted that in Europe people tend to give their name and title first, followed by the company, whereas in Eastern countries the organisation comes first, followed by the official. It was explained to the participants that such details could have a significant impact on the outcome of business negotiations.
In addition, the lecture covered the importance of the business dress code, which has often been underestimated in the past, although it plays an important role in the formation of a successful image. The nuances of creating an image were discussed - from the right length of a tie to the peculiarities of wearing accessories. The key idea of the importance of details and their impact on confidence in all situations was emphasised, which is particularly relevant for effective negotiation in an international context.
The lecture ended on a high emotional level. The students actively asked questions and shared their impressions. The lecture was not just informative - it became a lively dialogue in which everyone discovered something new.
