On December 15, 2023, the premiere screening of the historical film "Tsar and Emperor: Peter the Great in Vienna" took place at the "Illusion" cinema in Moscow. The initiative to create the film was dedicated to the 350th anniversary of the birth of the first Russian emperor. The implementation of the project became possible thanks to the support and close collaboration of the Russian Embassy in Austria and the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Vienna, as well as the support of the Russian-Austrian Public Forum "Sochi Dialogue."
The project involved prominent representatives from the Austrian film industry and historical community, including director Robert Winkler, author and publicist Elizabeth Heresh, historians Stefan Karner and Iskra Schwarz.
The film is dedicated to an important historical event - Peter the Great grand European tour in 1697-1698, known as the "Grand Embassy," during which the ruler of the Russian Tsardom spent a month and a half in Vienna.
The screening was attended by Russian and Austrian guests, honorary representatives of the scientific community from both countries, as well as rectors of leading universities in Russia.
The event began with welcoming speeches by Andrey Alexandrovich Fursenko, Co-Chair of the Forum Coordination Committee, Maria Dmitrievna Matveeva, Director of Sochi Dialogue, Dmitry Evgenyevich Lyubinsky, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Austria, and Elisabeth Heresch, Austrian historian and publicist, one of the film's creators.
"The presented film shows how complex and diverse the process of establishing constructive interstate relations is, and how much depends on the mutual respect between parties. After all, it is only based on such an approach that bridges between countries can be built, preserved, and restored," said Dmitry Lyubinsky in his welcome speech. The Ambassador also expressed gratitude to the Russian side of the Sochi Dialogue Forum for their support in organizing the premiere screening.
