SPIEF 2026: Sochi Dialogue Contributes to Discussions on the Future of Young Scientists at the Coordinating Council Session

SPIEF 2026: Sochi Dialogue Contributes to Discussions on the Future of Young Scientists at the Coordinating Council Session

The development of young researchers and support for the next generation of scientists were among the central themes of the International Youth Day – “Day of the Future” at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF 2026). As part of the Forum’s business programme, the Coordinating Council for Youth in Science and Education held a landmark expert session attended by Daria Kozlova, Deputy Director of the Russian-Austrian Civil Society Forum Sochi Dialogue.

The panel discussion, entitled “Passing the Torch: How Can We Support Young People in Science and Involve Them in Science and Education Policy?”, focused on developing new approaches to strengthening the country’s scientific talent pipeline. At a time of major global challenges and rapid technological transformation, issues of continuity, mentorship, and creating a supportive academic environment for early-career researchers have become strategic national priorities.

Leading experts, scientists, and representatives of government agencies explored several key areas for supporting young researchers:

  • Effective tools for launching scientific careers.

Participants examined existing grant programmes, research infrastructure, and institutional support mechanisms that enable young scientists to initiate research projects and pursue sustainable career development.

  • Integration into science policy.

The discussion put forward practical approaches to increasing the participation of young researchers in shaping science and education policy at the federal level and contributing to the country's long-term strategic agenda.

  • Leadership in technological development.

Participants outlined the conditions that would enable the next generation of innovators not only to put forward ambitious ideas but also to become key drivers of Russia’s scientific and technological advancement.

The participation of the Sochi Dialogue leadership in the Forum’s youth agenda reflects the Forum’s long-standing commitment to promoting academic cooperation. The Forum consistently supports interdisciplinary youth initiatives, viewing them as one of the strongest foundations for sustainable international and interregional cooperation.

The session took place on 6 June. For those who were unable to attend in person, a full recording of the discussion remains available on the official SPIEF website.
