On June 26, the 3rd International Youth Nuclear Forum “Obninsk NEW 2025” took place at the Obninsk Institute for Nuclear Power Engineering of the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI.
This year’s main theme was: “Dream and Create the Future of the Global Nuclear Industry!”
The Russian-Austrian Public Forum also took part in one of the discussions: “Obninsk Tech: Partnership that creates opportunities.”
Obninsk NEW 2025 is a two-week series of educational events for young people from various countries who have chosen the nuclear industry as their career path. This year, the events are being held from June 23 to July 6.
The central event of Obninsk NEW was the International Youth Nuclear Forum, held on June 26 — the same day that the world’s first nuclear power plant was launched in the city of Obninsk in 1954.
This year, the forum is part of the program of events celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Russian nuclear industry.
The main theme of the session was nuclear technologies, which have long extended beyond just energy. Today, they are actively used in medicine, transportation, agriculture, space exploration, water purification and conservation, and many other fields.
Behind each of these applications lies collaboration — between governments, businesses, universities, and international partners — all playing a vital role in the industry’s development.
A vivid example of such cooperation is the international project “Obninsk Tech,” which has become a hub for students, educators, scientists, and companies from around the world.
It is not just an educational center, but a real launchpad for careers and a gateway to participation in global nuclear projects.
One of the speakers at the session “Obninsk Tech: Partnership that creates opportunities” was Maria Matveeva, Director of the Russian-Austrian public forum “Sochi Dialogue.”
In her speech, she emphasized the importance of international partnership and the exchange of knowledge and experience in the field of science. She also shared her own professional background and expressed her willingness to contribute this experience to the nuclear industry through joint efforts.
During the event, participants also discussed the opportunities that participation in “Obninsk Tech” offers to students and young professionals, the role of partnerships in the development of the nuclear industry — from the local to the global level — as well as the benefits of taking part in Russian projects for international students, including prospects for scientific and career growth.
