On April 7, 2025, the Russian Orthodox Spiritual and Cultural Center in Paris hosted a lecture by Valentina Khlistun — an expert in business etiquette, a cultural history researcher, and an intercultural communication consultant. The event focused on ballroom traditions and their significance in diplomatic practice.
During the lecture, participants were invited to explore the ball as an important element of both social and international culture, reflecting behavioral norms accepted in society and diplomatic circles. Drawing on historical sources, including Routledge’s Manual of Etiquette (1875), Valentina Khlistun illustrated how balls served not only as venues for celebration but also as a subtle tool for elite interaction, status display, and the establishment of trust-based relationships.
A significant part of the lecture was devoted to the language of nonverbal communication: the etiquette of bowing, the art of inviting a partner to dance, rules of conversation, and dress code. Particular interest was sparked by the interactive components, such as the demonstration of the language of the fan, discussion of color symbolism in attire, and elements of a ballroom etiquette workshop.
The lecture combined historical retrospection with practical analysis, showing how classical norms of behavior are reflected in contemporary forms of formal and social interaction.
