"Dialogues on Genomics: Best Practices of Laboratories of the Russian Federation and Europe". Day 2

The program of the second day of the international conference of the Russian-Austrian Civil Society Forum «Sochi Dialogue» «Dialogues on Genomics: Best Practices of Laboratories of the Russian Federation and Europe» included eleven 40-minute TED sessions from leading Russian and European scientists. Among the lecturers are Russian and foreign leaders who have received grants from the Russian Science Foundation for the best bilateral projects. Such grants give an opportunity for joint research with European partners. Representatives of leading laboratories of Russia and Europe, characterized by a high international reputation and internationally recognized by research results, were also public speakers at the conference.

A distinctive feature of the speakers' presentations is the coverage of both the scientific and organizational components of the laboratory’s work and the conducted research. Each speaker not only shared his or her professional experience and knowledge, but also spoke about life experience and the process of building a laboratory, expressed the views on issues concerning the scientific community. The speakers also gave valuable advice to colleagues on laboratory management.

The speech of Omar Levanovich Kantidze, Deputy Director of Research, Head of the Genome Stability Laboratory of the Institute of Gene Biology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, on the topic “Structure and stability of the 3D genome” opened the second day of the conference. In his presentation, Omar Levanovich noted the importance of attending international and Russian scientific conferences and participation in collaborations for young scientists. He also described the main difficulties with the opening of a laboratory and the ways to overcome them.

An outstanding expert in molecular biology, project manager of the Center for Full-Genome Sequencing, Head of Laboratories at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Director of the Center for Life Sciences of the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, Professor at Rutgers University (USA), Doctor of Life Sciences Konstantin Viktorovich Severinov told the colleagues his way of becoming a scientist, discussed what is an impetus to the further development of a young scientist, compared the results of young laboratories in the United States and Russia and encouraged his colleagues to look at their capabilities and abilities in a new way. The speaker described the ability to teach and train as one of the most important factors for the success of the laboratory.

“The most important thing in your laboratory is people. If you don't have people, you won't have anything. And the only way to get them is to teach, ”stressed Konstantin Severinov.

The director of the institute, a foreign member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in the direction of animal genetics, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Natalia Anatolyevna spoke about the activities, scientific achievements and history of the development of genetic research at Federal Research Center for Animal Husbandry named after Academy Member L.K. Ernst. The next presentation "Facts, not myths: the genomic revolution in animal husbandry" was made by Johann Zölkne, the head of the animal husbandry department of the Vienna University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (Austria). The Austrian scientist spoke about a collaboration scientific offer(made by Natalia Zinovieva in 2014) with the team members of L.K. Ernst Federal Research Center for Animal Husbandry: Alexander Sermyagin, Arsen Dotsev, Veronika Kharizova. Johann Zölkner noted the huge number of joint publications and extremely successful cooperation with Russian scientists and expressed his hope for further productive work.

“I really love to participate in scientific collaborations with Russian colleagues, and I am very grateful to be here at this conference now,” said the scientist from Vienna.

The conference was also attended by a French representative of the scientific community - Laurent Gentzbittel - professor, head of the laboratory of digital agriculture of Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology. In his report "The use of agrogenomics and biotechnologies to raise the agro-industrial complex of Russia to the global level," he presented a review of EU and Russian agricultural markets, noted the promising prospects of Russia in this industry, pointed out the strategic goal of the Skolkovo Institute to bring Russian agriculture to the world level.

Such issues as the choice of a scientific career and organization of laboratory work were also arisen at the conference:

  • Makayev Vsevolod Yurievich, specialist in the field of systems biology, computational genetics and bioinformatics, Head of the laboratory, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences; Vavilov Institute of General Genetics “Bioinformatics of regulation switching genes of higher multicellular "
  • Fishman Veniamin Semenovich, PhD in Biological Sciences, Leading Researcher of the Sector of Genomic Mechanisms of Ontogenesis "Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence, Sberbank", Institute of Cytology and Genetics, Novosibirsk - "Imputation of epigenetic information based on machine learning methods"
  • Battulin Nariman Rashidovich, PhD in Biological Sciences, head of the laboratory of developmental genetics at the Institute of Cytology and Genetics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, specialist in the field of genetic engineering and spatial organization of the genome - «3D Genomics and Mice Genome Editing»
  • Skoblov Mikhail Yurievich, Head of the Laboratory of Functional Genomics of the "Research Centre for Medical Genetics ",PhD in Biological Sciences - "Functional analysis in my heart"
  • Kolpakov Fedor Anatolyevich, PhD in Biological Sciences , Head of the Bioinformatics Laboratory of the Federal Research Center for Information and Computing Technologies - “BioUML and GTRD are a long way to the top
  • Commissars Alexey Sergeyevich, PhD in Biological Sciences , Leading Researcher of the Chemical-Biological Cluster of the University of ITMO - «Assembly and Annotation of Complex Genomes»

Within the framework of the scientific and technological educational program "Big Challenges", which was taking place simultaneously with the conference at "Sirius", the leading researcher of the Medical University of Vienna (Austria) Romanov Roman Aleksandrovich held a master class for schoolchildren “How the brain regulates body, weight and appetite”
