Russia - Austria: milestones of shared history

Russia - Austria: milestones of shared history

ED. BY: St. Carner and A.O. Chubarian

On January 16, Russian-Austrian Public Forum Sochi Dialogue within the framework of the Gaidar Forum International Conference held a presentation of the second edition of the book ‘Russia - Austria: Milestones of Shared History’. The book, published in the Russian and German languages, is a scientific and educational project involving scientists from leading universities and research institutes of both countries. Co-authors were the co-chairs of the Russian-Austrian commission of historians, Professor Alexander Chubarian, Scientific Director of the Institute of General History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Professor Stefan Karner, Director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for the Study of the Effects of War. The project was organised by the Russian-Austrian Commission of Historians, the Institute of General History of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for the Study of the Consequences of War.

The book presents a common view of Russian and Austrian academics on the events of joint history from the end of the fifteenth century to the present day. The book focuses on complex international issues: the European balance of power in the 18th century, the Napoleonic wars, the fall of empires and the world wars of the 20th century, the crises of the Cold War and the challenges of modernity. The book, which is intended as a handbook for history teachers and students, is also aimed for a wide range of readers. The main point is that Europe is not confined within the borders of the European Union and that Russia is an important part of our common continent.

The publication was financially supported by the Russian-Austrian public forum "Sochi Dialogue", whose constituent meeting was held in the presence of the presidents of both countries, V.V. Putin and A. van der Bellen on 15 May 2019 in Sochi.
